Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
