Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
