Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
