Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
