Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
