July 30th, 2024 by Gina

Be cunning, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
