Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
