January 25th, 2026 by Gina

Be brilliant, play smart, and master craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
