Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
