Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
