Be clever, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
