Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
