Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Plans: The Background of Craps
February 18th, 2021 by Gina

Be brilliant, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
