Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
