Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Plans: The Background of Craps
April 30th, 2026 by Gina

Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
